The Polish F-16 Jastrząb (Hawk) fighters are about to undergo a technological revolution. The upgrade to the F-16V standard will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of Poland’s jets.
Despite the arrival of fifth-generation aircraft, the F-16 remains one of the world’s most important combat platforms.

The F-16 fighter jet can remain in service for several decades. The aircraft airframe was designed with an adequate durability margin, and subsequent upgrades allow for an even longer service life. In military aviation, however, an aircraft’s age is not the most important factor. Its effectiveness is determined primarily by onboard systems – radars, computers, software, communications, and electronic equipment. These are the components that advance the fastest. Hence, the Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) program is not a routine overhaul. It is a comprehensive modernization that provides the trusted design with capabilities comparable to the latest F-16 variants and ensures it remains operational for decades to come.
The MLU program was signed in August 2025 for the entire fleet of 48 Polish F-16C/D Block 52+ aircraft that were in service with the Polish Air Force at the time. Currently, following the crash of one of the aircraft [which occurred in 2025 during preparations for the Radom Air Show, resulting in the death of Maj (Pil) Maciej ‘Slab’ Krakowian], the Polish Air Force operates 47 such aircraft. The MLU agreement means that all Polish F-16C/D Block 52+ aircraft will be upgraded to the F-16V standard, also known as Block 72. The first two F-16s will undergo modernization in 2028, initiating the implementation and certification phase of the program. The remaining aircraft will be upgraded between 2030 and 2038. A significant portion of the work will be carried out by Military Aviation Works No. 2 (WZL-2, Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2) in Bydgoszcz, which has been responsible for maintaining Poland’s F-16s for nearly 20 years.
MLU is much more than just another maintenance program. Jakub Gazda, CEO of WZL-2, emphasizes that the plant is entering a new league of contractors working on the F-16. So far, the company has primarily provided maintenance and repairs. Now it will also participate in the extensive modernization of the aircraft, gaining access to the manufacturer’s latest technologies, documentation, and training. “This is not only an investment in equipment, but also in the expertise of Polish engineers and technicians,” says Gazda.
New Capabilities
What exactly is a Mid-Life Upgrade? It is a thorough overhaul combined with replacement of critical systems. The airframe remains the same, but the interior changes so much that the aircraft’s combat capabilities become similar to new versions of the fighter.
The most noticeable change will be the new AN/APG-83 SABR radar, which uses AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology. Unlike older radars with mechanical scanning, it uses an electronically controlled antenna composed of numerous transmit/receive modules (TRMs). As a result, it detects and tracks targets faster, it is more resistant to interference, and it can simultaneously operate in air-to-air and air-to-ground mode.
The radar itself, however, is just one component of the entire system. Equally important is the mission computer, which integrates information from the radar, electronic warfare systems, sensors, communications equipment, and weapons, providing the pilot with a single, coherent picture of the situation. The greater its computing power, the faster the data is processed, allowing the pilot to focus on executing the mission rather than analyzing information from many different sources.

In addition to replacing key components of the avionics, the modernization will also provide the foundation for further integration of the aircraft with future generations of weapons, communications systems, and electronic warfare systems. The program also includes structural modifications that will extend the airframe’s service life to approximately 12,000 flight hours, as well as the modernization of training infrastructure.
Generation 4.5
The MLU program will significantly upgrade Poland’s F-16s, but it is not intended to transform them into fifth-generation aircraft. The F-35 is a design with completely different capabilities, primarily due to its reduced detectability and significantly more advanced data fusion. However, the modernization ensures that the F-16 remains a worthy partner for the F-35. Both types of aircraft will be able to cooperate more effectively during joint missions, exchanging information and leveraging their respective strengths. Such cooperation between different platforms is now becoming the global standard.
The MLU program is therefore in line with the global trend in military aviation development. Modern air forces are increasingly choosing not to discard proven, reliable designs. Instead, they are equipping them with modern onboard systems, thereby extending their service life and enhancing their combat capabilities. This approach has been adopted, for instance, by the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Greece, Bahrain, and Slovakia, which proves that, despite the arrival of fifth-generation aircraft, the F-16 remains one of the world’s most important combat platforms. Properly modernized, it can effectively carry out missions for decades to come, working alongside newer designs rather than competing with them.
An Opportunity for Poland
For Poland, the significance of the program extends beyond the Air Force itself. The participation of WZL-2 contributes to the development of domestic industrial capabilities in the field of the most advanced aviation technologies. Specialist training, knowledge transfer, and carrying out modernization work domestically increase operational independence and reduce fleet maintenance time. It also builds experience that can prove valuable in future military programs.
The economic aspect is also significant. The expertise gained during the implementation of the program may in the future pave the way for Polish participation in the maintenance and modernization of F-16 fighters belonging to other countries, which would strengthen the position of the Polish aerospace industry within the European technical support system.
The F-16 modernization program shows that modern air superiority does not rely solely on the purchase of new aircraft. It is equally important to maintain existing equipment at the highest technological level. Thanks to MLU, Poland’s F-16s will retain their capability to operate on the future battlefield, and the domestic aerospace industry will take another step forward, changing its role from a maintenance provider to a partner involved in the most advanced modernization projects. The effects of this investment will pay off for much longer than the aircraft modernization process itself.
